How to Welcome Non-Catholic Family and Friends to Your Catholic Wedding Mass

How to Welcome Non-Catholic Family and Friends to Your Catholic Wedding Mass

One of the most common concerns I hear from Catholic brides is this:

“A lot of my family and friends aren’t Catholic. Some have never been to a Catholic church before, and some may not even understand or appreciate our faith. How can I make them feel welcome while still honoring the sacredness of the Mass?”

If this is your situation, please know that you are not alone.

Over the years, I have worked with many couples where one side of the family was Catholic and the other was not. Sometimes there were different Christian denominations, different religions, or no religious background at all. Yet, their wedding day became a beautiful opportunity for families to come together in love and respect.

Remember, your Catholic wedding is first and foremost a celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage. It is not about expecting your guests to become Catholic. Instead, it is an invitation for them to witness the beautiful promises you are making before God.

Here are a few simple ways to help your guests feel more comfortable:

🤍 Include a short explanation of the different parts of the Mass in your wedding program.

🤍 Let guests know in advance that everyone is warmly welcome to attend and pray together, even though Holy Communion is reserved for Catholics who are properly prepared.

🤍 If appropriate, ask your priest if he could offer a brief welcome at the beginning of the Mass for guests who may be attending a Catholic liturgy for the first time.

🤍 Encourage your bridal party and immediate family to lead by example with kindness, reverence, and hospitality.

Most importantly, don’t spend your wedding day worrying about what everyone else is thinking.

Focus on the sacred promises you are making to each other. Let your joy, peace, and love be the greatest witness to your faith.

One of my favorite thoughts is this: For some of your guests, your wedding may be the very first positive experience they have ever had inside a Catholic church. They may not remember every prayer, but they will remember how they were welcomed and how they witnessed a love centred on Christ.

Pray for your guests before your wedding day. Ask the Holy Spirit to open hearts, to bring peace where there may be misunderstanding, and to let your marriage become a quiet witness of God’s love.

May your wedding not only unite two hearts, but also become a bridge of understanding, respect, and hope for everyone who shares in your special day. ❤️

A Prayer for Families and Friends Attending Your Catholic Wedding

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of family and friends who will gather to celebrate our wedding day. We know that each person comes with a different story, a different journey, and a different understanding of You.

We pray especially for those who are not Catholic or who may be attending a Catholic Mass for the very first time.

Open their hearts to experience Your peace and Your love. Help them to feel welcomed, respected, and embraced by the warmth of our community. May they see not only the beauty of our church, but also the beauty of a marriage founded on Christ.

Grant us the grace to be gracious hosts, faithful witnesses, and joyful disciples. May our words, our actions, and our love reflect You in everything we do.

Bless our families with unity, understanding, and mutual respect. Let our wedding day be a joyful celebration that brings people closer to one another and, above all, closer to You.

We entrust our marriage, our loved ones, and our future family to the loving care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
